Alex has worked in the acute NHS sector since qualifying in Medicine in 1986.  He was appointed as a Consultant Anaesthetist with a subspecialist interest in Paediatric Anaesthesia in 1996 and since that time has developed  a wealth of experience as a senior medical leader.  Having been an Associate Medical Director with responsibility for Healthcare Governance, in January 2008 he was appointed Medical Director of Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust, a large acute University Teaching Hospital delivering secondary care services to a population of 450,000 and tertiary services  to the 1.7m population of the Southwest Peninsula.  During his tenure in this role he has lead the development  of specialist, general and integrated cross-community services and the clinical teams that deliver those services.  Through his specialist expertise in Healthcare Governance is has ensured that quality, safety and a focus on patient experience are at the heart of the health system.

As part of his postgraduate training in Paediatric Anaesthesia, he had the privilege of working at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, USA for a 14 month period, providing him with experience in the North American, Healthcare system

He also has significant experience  of partnership working across the health and social care community and with academic partners.  He has been an active member of the successful Southwest Peninsula  Academic Health Science Network and is the chairs its of the Best Practice and Innovation team.

At a National level, he is an active member of the AUKUH Medical Directors group, Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management and the NHS Top Leaders programme.

His specialist leadership and management skills include:  Quality Improvement, Service Improvement, Service Redesign and Reconfiguration,  Wider System Development, Partnership working and Professional Leadership and Management of the Clinical workforce.
