DJ has many years experience as an external advisor and combines his clinical practice as a Consultant in Emergency Medicine with his advisory work. He is also a clinical advisor to the Care Quality Commission, and a faculty member of the Moorfields academy. His non-clinical work focuses on implementation and leadership development within the acute sector, for both NHS and independent hospitals.

His background is not just clinical. His first degree was in Engineering and Computer Science, after which he spent several years in the City. He studied medicine at Nottingham and then, after several years as a junior doctor, he worked as a research physician and then as a management consultant. This provided him with five years of experience working on implementation programmes for multinational companies in the utilities, manufacturing and energy sectors.

He has an interest in the links between performance and organisational culture, particularly as it affects patient safety. He has spoken and written on the subject extensively, including in his book “The Meaning of CAREFUL” published in 2009.

DJ has worked with consulting teams on an unscheduled care system in West Sussex, a whole system urgent care system for both Kent and South East London where he combined his deep practical insights with facilitation skills to stimulate significant system change
