Derek has been working as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in Sheffield since 1993. In 2000 launched the One Health Group which is an organisation providing secondary care services to the NHS and continues on the management board as Chief Executive Officer. As such he has experience of working as a service provider in a traditional NHS environment and in the independent sector.

Derek has a clinical interest in knee surgery, particularly arthroscopic and ligament reconstruction commonly required in sports injuries. He also has a particular interest in Computer Navigated Knee Replacement. He is recognised as one of the UK’s leading knee surgeons and takes referrals nationally and internationally including many high profile athletes. Derek is frequently invited to lecture on knee surgery at national and international meetings. He is a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and the Faculty of Sports and Exercise Medicine.

He has held appointments as a Surgical Tutor at the Royal College of Surgeons of England and as such was involved in education and training in knee surgery at a national level. He has also served as an executive member of the British Association of Surgery of the Knee working with the British Orthopaedic Association and the Colleges of Surgeons on service delivery, education and training.
